What Is Amoxil?

Amoxil is an antibiotic drug from penicillin group that combats and kills bacteria in body and prevent them from growing. Amoxil is prescribed for wide range of common infections caused by bacteria such as: ear infection, bladder infections, gonorrhea, tonsils, throat, lungs infections, bronchitis, urinary track, and skin diseases. Amoxil also used to treat some of the sex transmitted diseases.

Amoxil is available in the form of Capsules, Chewable Tablets, Tablets, Powder to prepare oral liquid, and Pediatrics drops.

If you are sensitive to any of the penicillin group of drugs or if you have any history of allergy, you can’t use Amoxil. Let your Doctor know before you start Amoxil treatment.

How Should I Take Amoxil?

Doses of Amoxil depend upon the severity of infection. General doses for adult is 250mg or 500 mg for every 8 hours. Low doses are prescribed for children more than 3 months.

Amoxicillin Tablets can be taken with full glass of water and with or without food. Take Amoxil as prescribed by your Doctor. Never take Amoxil in larger amount or for longer period of time than recommended.

Oral suspension should always be shaken well and taken directly or mix it with water, milk, fruit juice, or ginger ale. Take it immediately after you mix it with anything.

The chewable tablet should be chewed or crushed before you gulp down it.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at regular intervals. Continue Amoxil for the entire period prescribed by your doctor. Never stop medications even if you feel better during treatment.

Precautions Before Taking Amoxil:

Before using this medication, let your doctor know about prescription and nonprescription drugs you are using. Before treatment let your Doctor know if you are allergic to any Penicillin Group of medicines or if you have Asthma, clotting disorder, liver diseases, or history of diarrhea. And Let your Doctor also know if you are pregnant, carrying a baby, breast-feeding, or want to become pregnant.

It is very important to take Amoxil as prescribed by your Doctor. Skipping or increasing doses, stopping early or using longer than recommended may lead to medicinal reaction.

Patients suffering from Mononucleosis should not consume Amoxil, as this may increase the risk of rashes on the body.

Amoxil is generally safe using during pregnancy, although complete risk is not known. Talk to your Doctor or pharmacy before using during pregnancy.

As you grow older, kidney function turns down. The kidneys have removed Amoxil. Therefore, elderly people are more sensitive to this drug.

What Are The Side Effects of Amoxil?

If you are allergic to Penicillin group of drugs, do not take Amoxil without consulting to your Doctor.

Use of Amoxil for long period may result into oral thrush or vaginal fungal infection.

Severe reactions of Amoxil are rare, but seek emergency medical help if it occurs.

If any of above side these effects continue or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

What Happens If I Miss The Dose or Take Over Dose?

You have to take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, skip the missed one and go for next regular scheduled dose. Never consume additional medicine to make up the missed dose.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.

Symptoms of overdose may result into behavioral change, confusion, irregular urination, and or seizure. If you suspect that you have consumed more than prescribed medicines, contact your Doctor immediately.

How To Store Amoxil?

Keep all Amoxil medicines at dry place and out of the reach of children and pets.
Refrigeration is necessary but not for powder mixed with water and this solution should be discarded after 14 days, if not used.

Moisture and Heat may break down medicine. Keep away from heat, direct light, and damp places.

Follow the directions on the label. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed. Be sure that any discarded medicine is out of the reach of children.

Interaction of Amoxil With Other Drugs:

Before the Amoxil therapy, let your Doctor know about the prescription medicine or over the counter medicine, you are using including vitamins and minerals.

Following drugs may have negative effects if used with combination of Amoxil.

Rheumatrex, Doxycycline, Trexall, Benemid, Bactrim, Demeclocycline, Septra, Zithromax, Biaxin, Erythromycin, Declomycin, Erythrocin, Telithromycin, Troleandomycin, Adoxa, Doryx, Oracea, Vibramycin, Minocycline, Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin, Tetracycline, Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, and Tetracap

Amoxil may decrease the usefulness of birth control pills and can result in pregnancy. You need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using this medication.

Amoxil may affect the results of certain lab tests. Let the laboratory personnel know that you are using Amoxil.

There may be more drugs that may interact with Amoxil. Consult your Doctor or Pharmacist for more information.
